Quote by Joss Whedon, graphic printable from Don’t Eat the Paste here. I’ve posted about my philosophy about crafting before, especially after being challenged by an interviewer on my statement “homemade ugly”. And let’s be real here, if you craft you know exactly what I mean by “homemade ugly”. These crafts are some of the ones that when you rethink/rework them turn out to be the best or worst work. I think that whatever you do that is “new to you”, pushes you outside your comfort zone, opens your mind etc… will translate into all aspects of your life - at least they have in mine.
This post stems from a critique I read about Craft Wars on TLC by The New Yorker I found on Mark Montano’s FB site. The New Yorker article was titiled: Don’t Put a Bird On It: Saving “Craft” from Cuteness. While I don’t love the show I think an important point was missed in the article that lots of people (like many of my friends) don’t think they are creative at all and from personal experience I have found when they succeeded at a little craft project they went on to more ambitious projects and discovered an entirely new side to themselves.
