EDIT: Dontalella from inspiration & realisation (my go to fashion/sewing expert) who has her own tutorial on a J.Crew appliqued floral tee here wrote me that:

“when I make applique on thin knits, I use old thin knits - they don’t fray, but it’s safer to cut the applique (especially if it has some sharp angles or edges) a bit wider than needed.”
