Dear Bloggers: Tumblr and Pinterest are NOT Sources

Dear Bloggers,

Tumblr and Pinterest are NOT “sources”. I can’t stand it when I’m on a blog and no source info is under the photo. Some bloggers put up a little (via) sign, but then I almost always know I’ll be directed to Tumblr or Pinterest as their source. If I’m directed to Pinterest, then I’m almost always then directed to Tumblr! Google Image Search has helped immensely because I don’t have to even leave the site to try and track the original source. I’ve installed google image search app on my computer and all I have to do is right click on a photo to try and find its source. But isn’t this the job of bloggers? Don’t they have some responsibility to post real sources as they are asking all of us to give them credit for their photos?

Of course there are blogs that have impeccable links like Design Sponge. The blogs that are doing the best seem to document everything with real sources all the time - meticulously.

And then there are the blogs that ask us not to publish their photos, many of which (on some sites) aren’t even theirs. They got them from Tumblr or Pinterest.

See the vicious circle? If everything is everyone’s then nothing is yours.

That’s why I will always be a detective on the internet and get the actual source for something if possible, because I want my photographs to be my photographs.
